Sr Software Engineer

Velocity Software is looking for a Senior Software Engineer for the development and support of zVPS (formerly ESALPS). The ideal candidate has excellent technical skills in z/VM and Linux, as well as good communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Development product features to ensure that the product suite remains effective and state-of-the-art
  • Analyze, isolate, and correct product defects in a timely fashion
  • Provide customer support via email and telephone to resolve issues and answer question or concerns
  • Install product suite remotely or on-site if required
  • Create and present product and/or industry related presentations to be given to installations and various user groups

Requirements:

  • Strong High Level Assembler skills in a z/VM environment
  • Strong REXX programming skills

We at CA Technologies currently have an opportunity available for a Sr Software Engineer out of our Lisle, IL office. Our ideal candidate would need to know the ins and outs" of VM internals, has developed with BAL (Assembler), and has worked with RACKF, ACF2/VM and/or TSS/VM before.

This position is responsible for creating and/or maintaining software applications for a product or family of products. Provide complex code modification, testing and debugging tasks. Provide high level analysis related to software design and development and solve problems. Evaluate impact of software performance, and recommend changes to software design team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and code complex units/modules/products that meet functional and business requirements on schedule and within budget.
  • Develop plans outlining steps and time tables for developing programs and communicate plans and status to management and other development team members.
  • Write and maintain documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and corrections.
  • Perform unit/module testing of software to find errors and confirm programs meet specifications.
  • Fix bugs, add enhancements, and convert software to other platforms.
  • Set up software configuration control and software development environments including program source control to ensure reliable backups and source code integrity.
  • Participate in design and code reviews with other developers.
  • Assist Quality Assurance Team by providing assistance to testers and support personnel as needed to determine system problems.
  • Develop and direct software testing plans for quality assurance.
  • Provide input to establish and improve departmental processes and procedures.
  • Provide product content to Technical Writers.
  • Mentor, train, develop and serve as knowledge resource for less experienced Software Engineers.
  • May have indirect reports and manage a small project team.

Key Requirements

  • Strong expertise in Assembler and VM is a must
  • Bachelor's Degree or global equivalent in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Master's degree or global equivalent a plus.
  • Typically 5 or more years of experience (3 to 5 years with a Master's Degree) in software development, Level 2 Support or a related field.

VM & VSE Systems Software Support Specialist

The Systems Software Support Specialist will be responsible for maintaining computer hardware and systems software and applications required for administrative computing. The systems are on a server running IBM VSE/ESA and z/VM mainframe platform that interfaces with Microsoft software based systems. This person will be working with a reporting system and other applications that require data feeds from the current IBM mainframe system. The person will also participate in a conversion of administrative information systems and data reporting. Review of applications will begin by April 19, 2010 and continue until the position is filled.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working as an IBM z/VM and VSE/ESA systems programmer or z/VSE systems programmer
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems or a related degree
  • Eight years of experience working as an IBM z/VM and as VSE/ESA systems programmer or z/VSE systems programmer in a production environment may be substituted for the above requirements
  • Successful performance in an on campus interview
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills are required to work with functional users
  • Must be highly motivated to work in a fast-paced environment and experienced in working with diverse populations
